The Nail Colours Redefining Neutral This Summer

For years, discreet nails were almost synonymous with nude. Beige, sheer pink and shades close to the natural colour of the skin became dependable choices for anyone who wanted a polished manicure without making the polish the centre of the look.

This season, softness is taking on colour.

Butter yellow, baby pink, pale lilac and mint green are among the most interesting shades emerging now. They are not new versions of nude β€” nor do they need to be. What is changing is the assumption that understated nails must sit close to the colour of the skin.

On nails, the influence of quiet luxury is less about one prescribed shade than the overall impression: a precise shape, an even gloss and colour chosen with intention. Restraint does not depend on the absence of colour, but on how that colour is worn.

Not every yellow, pink or lilac can behave as a neutral. The shades taking on that role are softer, less saturated and often slightly creamy or translucent. The colour remains visible, but it does not take over the hand or require the rest of the look to work around it.

Butter yellow brings light without the sharpness of a brighter yellow. Pale lilac adds a cooler, more deliberate note; baby pink keeps the familiarity of classic shades while feeling less predictable; mint green introduces freshness without becoming overly assertive.

On the hands, these colours appear as small points of light. On the feet, they often register more strongly, particularly through the straps of a sandal or against darker footwear. A manicure and pedicure need not match exactly: shades that relate without repeating one another can feel more considered.

Nude has not disappeared, nor has it lost its elegance. It has simply stopped being the only answer for those who prefer understated nails.

The new neutral does not need to imitate the skin. It only needs to occupy the right amount of space.
